1970
1970

Regent International Hotels is founded by legendary hotelier Robert H Burns as a joint venture with Japan’s Tokyu Group, and later joined by partners Georg Rafael and Adrian Zecha.

1976

Regent strikes a deal with Hong Kong developer New World to build and operate a landmark new waterfront hotel, the Regent Hong Kong.

The Mayfair New York becomes the Mayfair Regent, helmed by Georg Rafael.

1981

The glamorous Regent Hong Kong opens along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. Setting new industry standards,  including the introduction of the first five-fixture bathroom, it wins numerous international accolades as “the world’s best hotel”, becoming the flagship of Regent and a global benchmark.

1989

The Regent Beverley Wilshire (now Four Seasons Beverley Wilshire) opens. Originally built in 1928, this iconic Beverley Hills hotel was magnificently restored into a 395-room luxury hotel that recaptured its former glory and rightful place at the heart of the city’s social scene. It was subsequently chosen as the setting for Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

1990

Regent Taipei opens along with Regent Galleria is the most successful hotel in Taiwan. Its pioneering design of luxury malls as part of the hotel experience was an industry first that also influenced hospitality trends to date.

1992

Robert Burns sells his interest in Regent and the brand is acquired by the Four Seasons group. Four Seasons rebrands a number of the existing properties and under-development hotels including New York, Milan and Bali.

Designed as a Regent, the Four Seasons Bali opens, setting another significant benchmark for luxury resorts with a private pool/villa concept that was the first of its kind at the time.

1997

Carlson Hotels Worldwide acquires Regent International Hotels from Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts. At this time, Regent hotels are located in New York (Wall Street), Almaty, Sydney, Bangkok, Jakarta, Singapore and Taipei.

2010

Regent is acquired from Carlson by Formosa International Hotels Corporation (FIH), the most successful hotel company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. As the original owner of the Regent Taipei, FIH returns Regent to its Asian roots. Chairman Steven Pan appoints original Regent founder Robert H Burns as Honorary Chairman.
